Italy Magazine
I want to send some American candy to a friend in Italy. What won't melt on the trip over there?!?
Alright, so I have a friend in Italy who I actually met on Y!A (isn't that awesome?!), but it turns out he has *never* seen nor tasted peanut butter! So I was thinking that I would overnight him some peanut butter m&ms, Reese's, and some other candy things, along with the NYT, ESPN magazine, and SLAM magazine (he likes basketball and is interested in American football).
However, I'm afraid the perishable items may, well, perish on their way over there, even if I overnight it. Is there any way to ensure that the food won't get smushed or melt on the way?
Also, which postal service is better? UPS, FedEx, or DHL? I sent him one package with two magazines and the Times in it on September 14 and it has yet to arrive. I sent it through USPS--never doing that again.
So if y'all know of any way to ensure the products will get there safe 'n sound, I'm all ears! Also, if any of you have ever sent food, I'd love to know how it went!
Thank you in advance!
Best advice might be to call the international shippers like UPS, Fed-Ex, or DHL and find out what they suggest. They can also quote you rates as to how much it might cost. It may cost more if you indicate there are perishable goods (chocolate candy) enclosed, since you will more than likely have to insure it.
As far as packaging itself, you will want to use insulated packaging, and sturdy packaging.
As far as peanut butter is concerned, send him a small jar of regular peanut butter. This way he can experiment with it as he chooses (mix with chocolate, try with various foods). One thing you should tell him to try, since it's originally from Italy, is mixing the peanut butter with Nutella. It almost tastes like eating a Reese's peanut butter cup.
If you wish to send chocolate candies with peanut butter, it may cost a lot more, since you will want to insure it, probably be asked to package it in a container with dry ice, among other things. Shipping a small jar of peanut butter will be cheaper.
