Why does a computer screen look like a film negative from an angle?
when I put it at a tilted angle, it looks like a film negative, why is that?
This is one of many disadvantages of LCD monitors over conventional CRT monitors. In short, LCD monitors use a backlight (fluorescent, except in the case of so-called LED monitors, in which LEDs are used) to supply light, which is then filtered and sent through the liquid crystal panel; the liquid crystals individually change shape to allow light of certain colors through. Part of the light filtering includes horizontal and vertical polarization, which purifies the light allowing for increased color accuracy and black levels, but a side effect of this is that the viewing angle is limited (the colors only appear correctly when viewed directly, as opposed to off-axis).
It's basically a compromise with LCD monitors: if the light weren't polarized, the viewing angles would be much wider (just like CRT and plasma displays), but the color wouldn't be as good and black would appear as a washed-out light gray. Phosphor-based (CRT & plasma) displays don't use backlighting, so they are able to achieve excellent contrast, color, AND viewing angles.
