Concert Pin
Does noise have depth? if so does this affect the overall loudness?
Ok, this may need a bit of explaining. If I was at a really loud rock concert or a fog horn was blowing or something and I made a really quiet noise like dropping a pin or something. Would this make the overall noise slightly louder? Basically is noise accumulative?
Actually, it would make the noise very slightly "louder" - as in carrying greater mechanical energy.
Sound is the impact of mechanically transmitted vibration on the senses of a critter (man or dog or cricket). This, oddly enough, is the solution to that old question "If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?" The answer being "no" because "sound" requires someone to sense the event, otherwise it is just more vibrational energy in the universe.
Because it can be expressed as vibrational energy, all "sound" is cumulative. Matched frequencies do share energy more readily, but as anyone who has stood on a city street can attest, many comparatively small sounds of wildly different frequencies will combine into a cacophony of large proportions.
I hope this helps.
