Zeppelin Stairway
What does the Led Zeppelin song, "Stairway to Heaven" mean?
I dont quite understand it. It is beautiful though. It would be great if you could interpret it for me, thank you
I think its about fake people trying to buy everything, things which can't be bought, but they have lived their lives that way, so they think everything can be bought. In the 1960's and 70's you had the hippies, rock n roll buffs, and then you had the preps/jocks/elite that they considered fake. Led Zeppelin fit into the whole rock and roll thing. Alot of band's did songs with that kind of theme, like The Who with Eminence Front, how the rich are ignorant sometimes to the real things in life that cant be bought. I think they are talking about a lady from a rich family, just someone who has gone through life without having to try hard to get things she wants. It's like the saying "can't buy me love". She thinks she can buy her way into heaven, doesn't give much thought about what kind of person she is on earth, or what she's doing in her life, she has an empty soul. Like the lines "When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed, with a word she can get what she came for."
Kind of like how the rich and privileged can change the rules, they go out at night, and if the shops are closed, they just bang on the door and the shop owners open up for them because they're rich and famous, they can get what they came for. Like the last line "The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll."
Saying that a rock stands for beliefs, doesnt budge, stays true. The roll is going with the trendy types, just going with the flow without stopping and thinking about what they're doing.
"And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul."
I think by this hes saying that whats behind us, our past, our shadows....is what determines who we are in the next life. Our soul is just a reflection of how we live. The deeds(shadow) are greater than the badge(soul), the soul is the badge worn for the deeds we did or how we lived our life in the past. Not just money and fame.
"There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold."
I think by this hes talking about the glitz and glamor, we all know her because shes famous, she shines white light and wants everyone looking at how great she is with all her material things and fake friends (how everything still turns to gold). But it wont turn to gold for her in the afterlife just because she has money.
